Genesal Energy key to guaranteeing supply in large hotels

In Mexico, climate instability is a factor that cannot be ignored, especially in regions where weather phenomena such as tropical storms and hurricanes are frequent.

These can cause unexpected and prolonged power outages, affecting the operation of key sectors such as the hotel industry. To cope with these conditions, having a reliable energy back-up system, such as a generator, is essential.

Genesal Energy has designed and installed three generator sets in a renowned hotel chain in Mexico, ensuring that the establishment continues to operate safely and efficiently during adverse situations and guaranteeing the operation of emergency & IT systems, heating and air conditioning that ensure the safety and comfort of guests.

In the hotel industry, operational continuity is key to ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for guests. In this context, the installation of generator sets as a backup power source has become essential, especially in regions where power outages can jeopardize both safety and comfort.

Project objective: Safety and comfort, come what may

The main objective of this project was to provide a reliable back-up power source for the hotel, ensuring that essential services continue to operate during any power outage. Emergency systems, such as exit lights, fire alarms, automatic doors and security equipment. Maintaining comfort is also a priority, ensuring the operation of air conditioning, lighting and other basic services that directly impact the experience.

Thanks to this installation, the hotel now has a robust energy solution that ensures continuous power supply during critical situations. Guest safety and service comfort are assured, reinforcing Genesal Energy’s commitment to providing tailored energy solutions that meet the highest demands in any industry, including hospitality.

What solution did Genesal Energy engineer?

Genesal Energy designed and installed three open generator sets, each equipped with advanced features to ensure optimal performance and efficient integration into the hotel’s facilities. These generators have 600 litres baseframe integrated fuel tanks. In addition, an automatic fuel transfer system was incorporated to connect the daily tanks to a main tank, ensuring that the fuel supply is constant and efficient.

The units are equipped with a control panel that allows parallel operation between them, which facilitates management and ensures constant performance. A synchronisation board was also provided between the island of gensets and the grid. Motorised circuit breakers with trip coil were also integrated to protect the system against overloads and electrical faults. Safety was a priority in this design, including explosion-proof battery boxes, and hand pumps for both fuel transfer and oil drainage to facilitate maintenance.

Emergency power to guarantee electrical supply in a hotel complex in Mexico

We’ve recently supplied emergency power for a hotel complex in Mexico to guarantee continuous electrical supply in any situation.

This will be possible through the design and manufacture of two generator sets (GEN1250CA) prepared to cover the energy needs of these facilities should any failure or accident take place in the mains network.

The fact that the hotel is located in Mexico, with a climate which is subject to intense and harsh changes in weather such as cyclones or tropical storms, makes the installation of generator sets, which must be prepared to start up in the most difficult of circumstances, even more necessary.

Why is it so important for this type of facilities to possess generator sets?

This type of buildings, which are usually of great dimensions and feature numerous additional services, require their own power generation system for emergencies as they cannot leave anything to chance.

Halls, bedrooms, rest and restaurant areas, lighting, DHW, elevators… all areas, whether private or common, must always possess adequate power supply as a power outage would entail serious losses for both the clients and management of the hotel. At Genesal we’re specialists in this type of buildings -the first Hilton in Galicia is one of our latest projects-.

We offer a different, comprehensive service

Additionally, Genesal Energy’s broad experience in Mexico, a country in which it owns a branch office, makes the whole process with the client even easier. From the very beginning, the company provides the client with the knowledge of our engineers, a 360º service where all processes prove a lot easier despite their complexity, in important aspects such as genset commissioning or maintenance.

For this hotel complex, each generator set will supply power to a step-up transformer which changes the genset voltage to medium voltage and synchronizes both gensets and the mains in the event of an emergency.

This was the solution provided by Genesal’s engineers

From a mechanical point of view:

  • A base frame adapted to the assembly comprised of a Cummins KTA38 G14 engine and Stamford HCI634J1 alternator was developed, calculated and manfactured.
  • BRB AMC BRB 220 40 SH M24 anti vibration mounts were installed to prevent the transmission of unwanted vibrations to the hotel structure and a busbar of easy access and connection, but with adequate safety measures.
  • A control panel was designed to allow the taking of genset measurements from the medium voltage side, in such a way that, even if the group generated in low voltage, the startup and synchronization would be carried out in the medium voltage network.
  • To maintain the alternator protected if ever the step-up transformer fails, a specific protection relay for the low voltage part was added so that, if ever there were a short-circuit between the transformer and alternator, the genset could shut down and isolate the transformer to avoid greater damage.
  • Furthermore, a control panel for the management of the parallel operation between the island of gensets and the mains was supplied, so that the island would be capable of automatic startup following a mains failure, and synchronization upon mains return would be possible, so that the loads remain powered during the whole mains return process.
  • Finally, to ensure fuel economy of the gensets, between both gensets is a power management system which allows for one of the gensets to shut down if during a certain time the load dips below the configured value, starting up and synchronizing again if the consumption of the loads increases.

Characteristics of the generator sets

  • Alternator with PMG.
  • 600L base frame fuel tank.
  • Motorized breaker.

We’ve increased our presence in Africa: emergency power for a luxury hotel on Ivory Coast

Guaranteeing permanent power supply is essential in any hotel, especially if we’re talking about one in the African continent, where it’s necessary to take special caution to avoid any issues with the mains network.

One of our latest projects in Africa has taken us to Ivory Coast: we manufactured and supplied two special gensets for a new luxury hotel in the city of Abidjan, without a doubt the economic capital and most modern city in the country, with impressive skyscrapers and a great port area.

With more than 25 million citizens, Ivory Coast is one of the most dynamic countries in the continent, aspiring this year to turn into an emerging country thanks to its constant and sustained growth, sitting at around 7% until 2023.

Customised solution

For the hotel complex, the client needed two gensets capable of adapting to the building, so at Genesal Energy we came up with a special solution.

Upon listening to the client’s needs and analyzing the hotel’s infrastructure, both units were built with their own control systems comprised of a tactile screen and a PLC in order to manage the redundant operation for both gensets.

Likewise, with the goal of making connection easier, a busway was designed so that both gensets could operate redundantly, alternating the operation between one another.

The gensets were manufactured following French standards with regard to safety installations.

Features

  • Cooling system with heat exchangers through a remote radiator.
  • Power outlet to existing busway in the installations.
  • Redundant operation.
  • Control of the distribution boards in the client’s installations.

Galicia’s first Hilton hotel trusts in Genesal Energy emergency power

Generator sets are indispensable in hotels as they are buildings which, due to their characteristics, under no circumstances can be left without power.

In the event of a mains failure, the generator set is essential and must start up in that very moment to supply power to all the hotel’s installations as each of its services must remain operative: laundry, kitchen, restaurant, rooms and, in some cases, even the central reservation system. Nothing can be stalled.

The hotel opened its doors in A Coruña on September 10th and aspires to become a reference in the Northeast of Spain. The project has entailed an investment of 14 million euros and the creation of 40 direct and 20 indirect jobs. Design, technology and innovation are three of the characteristics which define this hotel, which features 59 rooms.

A great dining terrace, designed for use in both summer and winter; a versatile library room, which may be used for business meetings, as well as a private terrace, are just some of the Hilton’s attributes.

Reliable and silent

To keep everything running at one hundred percent, the Double Tree by Hilton A Coruña, the first of the chain to open in Galicia, has a generator set designed and manufactured in our facilities in Bergondo, A Coruña, in order to carry out its assigned function in the hotel – one of the most exclusive in the city of A Coruña as well as the autonomous community as a whole – as effectively as possible.

Along with maximum reliability, the emergency genset is soundproofed to guarantee maximum sound level reduction, a fundamental aspect for buildings which, just like Double Tree by Hilton A Coruña, are located right in the city center.

Installation and features

Keeping in mind the space limitations in the installation area, a custom canopy had to be designed. As the engine-alternator assembly’s main compartment’s dimensions had to be maintained in order to ensure maximum sound attenuation, the generator set’s height was reduced instead and the base frame fuel tank eliminated. Instead, a double-walled external fuel tank was supplied, providing a greater autonomy.

Furthermore, the placement of the exhaust gas silencer was modified, placing the outlet to the side of the canopy instead of through its top, which would have been the standard configuration, in order to channel the exhaust gases through the existing chimney.

On the other hand, the soundproofing of the generator set was also increased through the integration of sound absorbing material of a greater thickness, as well as air inlet and outlet silencers attached to the unit. The client requested a specific sound level which we had to confirm during the FAT procedure, even surpassing the attenuation required.

The duct was also designed made-to-measure to channel the air outwards, as the air outlet was located in a place difficult to access.

In order to reduce the vibrations transmitted, the unit was placed on an anti-vibration canvas. Furthermore, we carried out the extraction of the existing generator set from the old building.
