Generator sets for Data Processing Centers (DPC)

We design and supply generator sets to ensure the operation of Data Centers in case of failure of the main power supply.

Continuous power

Data Centers or Data Processing Centers (DPCs) are facilities that house complex and modern computer equipment, from computers to storage or network systems, where any electrical failure can be catastrophic by putting at risk the large amount of information they handle. For this reason, in these facilities, the electrical service must be continuous, without interruptions.

In terms of system availability, Uptime Institute has created the TIER classification system to evaluate the infrastructure of data centers. The classification starts at DPC Tier 1, used for small businesses, up to Tier 4, used in large corporations.

TierCharacteristicsAvailability
1No power redundancy.99.671%
2Partial redundancy in power and cooling.99.749%
3Fault-tolerant N+1. At least 72 hours of protection against power failure.99.982%
4Fully redundant 2N+1 infrastructure. At least 96 hours of protection against power failure.99.995%

For sizing, there are 2 standards available:

COP Power according to ISO8528-1:

Allows the generator set for Data Center to work at 100% of its nominal load indefinitely.

Sizing the sets based on this rating implies selecting larger engines and making them work outside their most efficient point of operation.

DCC Power (DataCenterContinuous Power):

This rating complements those defined by ISO8528-1 and allows the set to work at 100% of its nominal load indefinitely powering the Data Center. It is based on statistics of diesel engine starts and failures, which allow reducing the size of the sets compared to the COP rating.

For sizing, there are 2 standards available:

The loads applicable to the Data Center can be divided into:

  • Fire protection system, direct start motors.
  • Uninterruptible power systems and IT loads.
  • Cooling and refrigeration systems.
  • Lighting.

Usually, when sizing sets for Data Center, it is important to consider that the amount of non-linear load will be very significant, as well as the power factor of the loads, which is usually around 0.9.

Due to these requirements, special care must be taken when selecting the engine and alternator to achieve optimal performance without excessively oversizing them.

The loads applicable to the Data Center can be divided into:

Characteristics of generator sets for Data Processing Centers:

We are specialists in designing, developing, manufacturing, testing, and commissioning the most suitable generator set system. Our engineers and technicians are prepared to offer the right solution based on the needs of each facility, whether it is an airport, a train station, a logistics center, or a water treatment plant.

Characteristics of generator sets for Data Processing Centers:

Multidisciplinary team

We have a multidisciplinary technical team that has worked on generator set projects for different areas (military, information technology, combined cycles and biomass, hospitals, etc.) capable of designing customized solutions:

  • Implementation of custom control for powering 2 data centers from 2 different networks, with backup from 2 generator sets that can power the 2 data centers individually or jointly through a transfer system, maintaining the separation of power supply for the data centers.
  • Synchronization between sets and return to any of the networks.
  • Redundancy between sets. Possibility to enable redundancy between networks.
  • Starting systems redundant electric, or electric-pneumatic.
