“Turnkey” power to reinforce the security of a data center in Tenerife

Extremely reliable and with no room for error.

That’s how generators must be in Data Processing Centers (DPC) or Data Centers, facilities dedicated to housing complex, high capacity computer systems, where a power failure or interruption in mains supply can turn into a catastrophe and generate enormous losses.

Emergency generator sets have an essential mission in these facilities: they are the best security guarantee, the necessary prevention system to avoid endangering all the information contained inside the Data Centers. At Genesal Energy we’ve been supplying this kind of generator sets for many years, units which have to be completely special (for example, it’s important to carefully select the engine and alternator to achieve optimal performance without oversizing them excessively). For this reason, because they have very particular characteristics, at Genesal Energy we design them made-to-measure, according to the client’s requirements and always after analyzing the characteristics of the space in which they must operate.

We’re experts in supplying turnkey and bespoke solutions: we take care of the entire process, from start to finish: from the design and manufacture to the transport, installation along with the processing of all necessary permits, setup of auxiliary elements (fuel, chimneys, etc.), commissioning and maintenance. We offer all services in one.

One of our latest projects of this kind has taken us to the Canary Islands, specifically to Tenerife, where we installed two generator sets for a DPC in Majuelos. They are two 500 kVA soundproof generator sets with a redundant parallel synchronization system.

The Data Center needed to grow, and in this expansion stage it incorporated new 5G communication systems into its installations. These systems require a greater consumption, and as such, there was a need to increase emergency power supply so that, if ever a voltage failure were to occur, the center could continue operating as normal. Our engineers’ solution consisted in two 500 kVA generator sets in parallel with a double-walled 2.000L fuel tank.

Once the manufacturing process had come to a close, at Genesal Energy, as is usual in these cases, we took care of the logistics and, before carrying out the transport, we managed all required arrangements with the administration entities involved. Due to the location of the Data Center and the characteristics and size of the generator sets as well as their location on the roof of the building, it was also necessary to cut off public access, and so we achieved the necessary permits.

Our engineers’ solution

  • Both gensets operate in parallel with eachother through the efficient management of the system and will start up via a free contact provided by the client when a mains failure occurs. Both units will synchronize and take the load.
  • If the total load is under 70% the power rating of one of the gensets, one of them will disconnect so that only one powers the loads.
  • If the total load is above 70%, the disconnected genset will start up, commencing synchronization with the operating genset.

Thus, the startup of both gensets will alternate depending on operating hours according to a configurable parameter in the control panel so that, if there is a difference in operating hours between both gensets, the one with least hours will remain operating in the case that the load doesn’t surpass 70%.

Features

  • Two symmetrical generator sets to visualize the control panel of both at once.
  • A 2000L fuel tank which supplies both gensets.
  • Two generator sets with synchronization panel.
  • C5 paint treatment.

We supplied emergency power to one of Europe’s most important Data Centers

At Genesal Energy we’ve supplied two emergency generator sets to one of the most important Data Centers in Europe, located on the outskirts of the German city of Munich.

The gensets have been designed to guarantee constant power supply in the event of a mains failure or any other potential setback.

Data Centers or Data Processing Centers (DPC) are complex facilities which hold modern computer equipment and where any failure in power supply can be fatal, as all the information contained in these giant servers would be left unprotected. For this reason, DPCs need continuous and constant power supply at all times.  A generator set is its greatest guarantee of protection, and at Genesal Energy, we’re experts in installing generator sets adapted to these facilities.

With leakage retention system

For this client specifically, at Genesal Energy we opted for made-to-measure generator sets: we designed a bespoke energy solution. The result translated into two generator sets distinguished by their low sound levels -as they must operate in a great office area-  and the fact that they are leakage-proof against any polluting spills (diesel, oil and coolant liquid), as established by the strict environmental legislation in Germany.

During the manufacturing process, the gensets were placed into two 20 foot containers, with two air inlet and outlet baffles of 1200mm in length to lower the gensets’ sound levels by 30 decibels. Furthermore, the exhaust silencers were mounted inside the containers in order to isolate the sound (whose certification was carried out by an external company) outlet.

Features

  • Power panel integrated inside the generator set’s container.
  • Control panel integrated inside the generator set’s container.
  • Baffles system for -30db. External parts in stainless steel.
  • Motorized louvers.
  • Fuel tanks of great capacity contained inside.
  • Fuel tank with leakage collection tray.
  • Fuel tank with automatic overfill protection system.
  • Container with liquid retention system.
  • Engine room heating to ensure startup in the cold.
  • Dedicated power outlet busbar due to the great number of conductors per phase.
  • Overvoltage protections.
  • GSM control.
  • Superficial coating of the container according to the ISO 12944 norm, in a C5I finish in the colour requested by the client.
  • Sound levels certified by an external company according to the ISO8528 norm:
    • Genset 1: 66 dB at 7m
    • Genset 2: 68 dB at 7m

Emergency power to guarantee security in a Data Centre in Madrid

One of our latest ‘turnkey’ orders has been the delivery, set-up and installation of two 1,250 kVA gensets, model GEN1250T, for a data centre in Madrid.

Comprehensive service is one of our strong points, an element that sets us apart because we offer the client the possibility to have a project that’s one hundred percent specialised from the beginning to the end of the process, right at their fingertips.

Data Centres or Data Processing Centres (DPCs) are specially designed environments which house complex and modern computer equipment, from computers to storage or network systems. They are facilities in which any electrical failure is a catastrophe as these types of instances can paralyze companies and risk the great amount of information they manage. For this reason, generator sets are vital in Data Centres as the service they provide must be continuous, without interruption.

In this case, we designed two special gensets for our client with the goal of adapting them to the data centre. Both have special base frames which fit into the very same structure that held the previous units, which were already almost 20 years old and obsolete. The gensets were, therefore, tailor-made. At Genesal Energy we took care of all bureaucratic procedures (Municipal procedures, street cut-offs…), as well as all loading and unloading works.

Besides, the gensets were transported to and installed in the building, causing the least possible impact in the area, which is why these tasks were carried out during two consecutive Sundays: the dismounting of the old units and set up of the new ones.

Features

  • Parallel operation between the units.
  • 2,000 A motorized genset breakers.
  • Level sensors in the genset’s fuel tank for the management of the external fuel transfer system.
  • Modbus RS-232/485 communication module.
  • Remote alarms in the form of dry contacts.
  • Engine cooling liquid recirculation and heating system to provide the correct temperature at start-up.
  • Spring type Silemblocks underneath the unit’s baseframe along with the engine-alternator assembly’s anti-vibration mounts to achieve a greater insulation.

Supply, delivery and installation of a 1,000 kVA generator set for a CPD in Barcelona

Another client who trusts in Genesal Energy for their data center.

But not only in regards to supply – the whole logistics management was taken care of, including the cutting off of the street, the heavy-duty crane for the genset’s placement, verification of the power cable connection, connection of the alarm cabeling with the building’s centralized system, exhaust gas piping and load tests.

All carried out from midnight to 6 AM in order to not interfere with the centre’s day-to-day. And of course, we’ll carry out the required maintenance works with a 24 hour service and in a maximum intervention time on site of 3 hours from the call made to our Call Center.

At Genesal Energy, we’ve installed a 1.000 kVA emergency genset, model GEN1000TC, in a Data Centre in Barcelona. The client needed a new unit due to the building’s expansion, and we carried out a totally comprehensive turnkey project. At Genesal Energy, we studied the project and took care of the whole process. The unloading, installation, and commissioning took place in under six hours and in the early hours of the morning to not alter the area’s usual activity with the transport and installation works.

Special and made-to-measure

The generator set was especially designed with the ideal dimensions for its installation in the data centre. Furthermore, the client asked us to change the existing genset – the previous one was 12 years old and now obsolete – without bringing any part of the procedure to a halt and while avoiding any potential risk in the process, which also included the dismantling of the old genset and the set-up of the new one.

To achieve complete knowledge of the situation, Genesal Energy’s Technical Service Team travelled to the Data Centre to see the facilites on siteand plan the necessary works. Additionally, the team took care of all bureaucratic procedures (Municipal procedures, street cut-offs…), as well as all loading and unloading works, and the installation of a provisional rental genset for its use during the operation. The new generator set was installed and started-up in less than six hours.

Features

  • Genset prepared for parallel operation with another genset to be installed soon.
  • 1600A motorised genset breakers.
