Tailored energy for the first Spanish floating wind turbine

GEN1650YA, suministrado para las obras del Hospital Arquitecto Marcide de Ferrol

The first Spanish floating wind turbine that will connect to the electrical grid is at the Bilbao docks. This prototype, called DemoSATH was installed in the BiMEP test area in Armintza (Bizkaia), where this technology will be tested for its future industrialisation in offshore wind farms. The prospects are very ambitious, DemoSATH would produce enough energy to feed the energy demand of more than 2000 households.

  • WHERE:

    Spain

  • CUSTOMER NEED:

A generator set capable of enduring the outdoors operating conditions of an offshore platform.

Genesal has taken part in this project designing and manufacturing the emergency backup power. In such a special environment, the generator sets must meet very demanding requirements.
In this kind of projects, personalisation is key to ensure that everything goes perfect. From the initial analysis and viability study to the manufacturing of the components of the approved energy solution are part of a whole. It is a comprehensive turnkey project adapted to the customer needs.

In the scenario of an offshore wind turbine platform, a perfect fit for outdoor & marine operating conditions was paramount to guarantee power supply in the event of cuts or failures. The abovementioned wind turbine test area is located 2 nautical miles from the coastline where the sea is 85 metres deep and the weather conditions very adverse.

“The emergency backup power is very important to ensure that the control and communications systems of the wind turbine keep working in the event of a failure in the usual power source”, our engineers explain.

Which solution was designed by our Engineering Team?

The main features of this generator set are:

  • A motorised louvers system for optimal thermal insulation of the cooling system from the outdoor conditions.
  • Antivibration special features tested by a multibody dynamic simulation.
  • C5 Canopy special treatment.
  • Totally marinized genset.
  • Anticondensation heater in the alternator.
