Emergency power for the new water-treatment plant in Palma de Mallorca, which will serve one million inhabitants

Generator set for water treatment plant 1830-2000 KVA

Almost 143 million euros of investment will modernise the water treatment network of Palma de Mallorca with the commissioning of the ‘Palma de Mallorca II’ Wastewater Treatment Plant, a gigantic project in which Genesal Energy has manufactured, supplied and installed a 1830-2000 kVA genset for water treatment plant.

  • WHERE:

    SPAIN

  • CUSTOMER’S NEED:

It was necessary to comply with distances and acoustic levels required by regulations and guarantee perfect operation of the equipment. The installation design inside the generator set room included air silencers and a 3,000-litre double-walled (steel-steel) tank.

The aim of the project was to ensure the power supply in the event of a mains voltage failure. The corresponding load calculations were carried out by our Engineering Department to select the ideal, customised generator set. In a project as large as the one undertaken on the island of Majorca, the generator sets have to be extremely precise.

The future WWTP will increase the capacity of the existing one to 90,000 cubic metres a day, which means providing a service for a million inhabitants. The infrastructure will also have sludge treatment for its use in agriculture. In a second phase the biological treatment lines will be completed up to 90,000 cubic metres per day. In addition, a new five-kilometre submarine outfall will be built. With these figures and colossal dimensions any failure in the supply would have major consequences for the population.

The challenge

Genesal Energy has extensive experience manufacturing customised units for island water treatment plants such as the one we executed for Ibiza. Although the infrastructures are similar each case is different, so the study of the terrain and the analysis of the project are essential prior steps before the manufacturing process.

In the case of the Palma de Mallorca II WWTP, one of the main challenges we had to face was the scarce space available in the room and the soundproofing required.

Our solution: genset for water treatment plant

After careful analysis of the context, the solution chosen implied the design and installation of a generator, the air silencers and the 3,000-litre double-walled (steel-steel) fuel tank inside the room complying with the distances required by regulations and guaranteeing perfect operation and the required acoustic level.
