INTRODUCTION
Having the correct kind of electricity supply at home is indispensable. Peace of mind, comfort and overall security depend on it. It’s crucial for the services currently considered essential, such as lighting, internet access or the operation of household appliances. This requirement is even more evident in a company.
Concepts such as the safety of personnel, an adequate client service, maintenance of productive processes, and ensuring the good condition of raw materials, the process and final product, all need to be able to count on an optimal power supply as, otherwise, the company can suffer important economic damage, as well as lose the clients’ trust or even human lives.
In the case of spaces and infrastructures of public use such as sports fields, event centres, military facilities, airports or hospitals, a continuous and reliable electricity supply is even more important, even vital, because we’re talking about essential services.
The power grid can fail. Any fault or breakdown, even a natural disaster, can leave us with no power supply from the main grid. A quality, reliable and efficient generator set, ready to start up and get going, is the best solution in order to reduce risks. That’s why it’s so important to have knowledge about emergency generator sets, to prevent the consequences of a problem with the main power grid and to continue working in a secure and efficient way.
A quality, reliable and efficient generator set is the best solution in order to reduce risks.
WHAT IS AN EMERGENCY GENERATOR SET?
A generator set is an electrical power generation system comprised of an internal combustion engine which is joint to an electrical generator via coupling. The engine provides mechanical power via fuel which can either be diesel, gas, gasoline or biofuel. This mechanical power is transmitted to an electrical generator or alternator which converts the mechanical power into the electrical power we need. Furthermore, every generator set has its control system.
In an emergency generator set, the engine & alternator system must be highly reliable, capable of responding immediately to a power demand. As such, it must have systems in place which, apart from controlling the engine and generator, are able to quickly locate a fault in the mains network in order to activate the equipment, thus responding to the demand of the consumers. In mere seconds, it must detect that the power grid isn’t working correctly or is even completely shut down. In this case, the system will start the genset up quickly so that power can be restored immediately: being able to substitute the power grid almost instantly is crucial.
As well as these characteristics, an emergency generator set, depending on its use and location, may require quality soundproofing and a fuel tank with sufficient capacity to supply power continuously, without interruptions during the breakdown period, and, if at all necessary, with the capability of safely being filled with fuel during operation.
Emergency generator sets can go from few kVAs for domestic use or to provide a small service to a company, to many kVAs formed by one or various units in parallel or redundant operation. This type of equipment is usually tailor-made in order to respond effectively and efficiently to the needs of each client.
A correct maintenance is also of great importance to guarantee a reliable operation. Finally, a complete control and management system is necessary as well, and this can even be a remote system, for the client’s supervision.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT
FOR AN INSTALLATION TO HAVE
AN EMERGENCY GENSET?
Whether it’s for a home, a business, industrial sector, a public use area or essential service -like a hospital or military installation- having an emergency generator set is important and in some cases even mandatory, as established by the norms and legislations of the different administrative entities. They’re also necessary in the following cases:
Damage in equipment and material
Being left without power can be critical whether in a house or in a company. If a freezer or refrigeration chamber is left without power, this can cause serious financial losses. The situation is even more critical in the industrial sector, where one fault in supply can cause losses in the entire production chain, setbacks and even machinery and equipment breakdowns, amongst other problems.
In some sectors, from a small hotel to a great industry, lack of power can cause total paralysis of the activity at hand and the effects are extremely negative: a stalled business gives off a bad image to the clients, a sensation of insecurity either from lack of service or low reliability. This generates dissatisfaction amongst the clients, who didn’t receive what they asked for when it was required. As well as losses in gain and profit, this bad image causes these losses to be prolonged in time.
Safety for people
From a small establishment to the celebration of a great show, from the industrial sector to buildings as critical as hospitals, a generator set is indispensible for people to be and feel safe. It’s necessary to guarantee emergency lighting or the minimum conditions required to carry out an evacuation of an event where hundreds or thousands of people have gathered. And if we’re talking about health services, this emergency equipment is vital.
Ultimately, not having an emergency generator set can result in important financial and reputation losses, and can even put people at risk.
IN WHICH CASES
IS IT NECESSARY?
Each country has extensive norms regarding the obligatory nature of owning supplementary or emergency power supply systems. This tends to apply to public use areas (such as spaces for the celebration of events and recreational activities, work and meeting spaces, as well as those used for healthcare).
Beyond those cases in which the legislation calls for emergency supply, a generator set is necessary when the financial, material and reputation losses which can be caused by any failure in supply cause us important economic losses. In this case, it’s always best we have a supplementary power supply system. The reason? An emergency generator set is a guarantee: it will allow for a safe shut down of the system, eliminating direct financial losses. Furthermore, a system like this allows us to have some minimal services which, in front of our client, will provide us with an image of seriousness and reliability, even in the more difficult situations, guaranteeing their loyalty.
GENESAL ENERGY
CAN HELP YOU
When you’re faced with one of these cases, you need a specialized, experienced company who understands your needs and can recommend the best solution. In these cases, Genesal Energy can help you to understand your problem, study all possibilities and design an optimal solution.
Genesal Energy is always prepared to offer the most efficient solution. A made-to—measure emergency generator set for each client. To achieve this, we take the following steps:
OBTENTION OF SPECIFICATIONS
The Engineering department collects, concretizes and defines the client’s needs one by one along with the staff responsible for the sale. This starting point is an indispensable step in the development of the project. At this stage, our engineers hold many meetings with the client in order to get to know all their requirements and tend to their inquiries reliably, developing in the meantime a predesign of the genset at both a mechanical and electrical level.
DESIGN
Upon obtaining these specifications, the engineering department begins designing the generator set and, when around 70-80% is complete, and after the client’s approval, the first design freeze is obtained. It’s then when another Genesal Energy department comes into play: Purchasing. This division begins searching and acquiring materials based on the specifications defined by the client and engineering. In this phase, all components and accessories which will shape the customized generator set are purchased. From the electrical components, to the mechanical elements, or the genset’s container or bodywork.
MANUFACTURE
The necessary materials for the production of the generator set are collected and the different components are welded. After that comes the paint, of protection classes C5I and C5M, key against corrosion and rust, and the compartmentalization and special soundproofing. It may be necessary to divide the container into compartments for the fuel tank, fire protection system, control panel and other elements. In the final part of the production process, the genset is placed inside the container and the cooling and exhaust systems, as well as the rest of components, are installed.
TESTING PHASE
Once the product is finalized, the tests which guarantee the highest generator set performance standards are carried out. An emergency generator set must pass rigorous tests in order to demonstrate its correct operation. As proof of having achieved this, at Genesal Energy we have the ULTRA certification. Our products obtain this after certifying that all stages during its production process have passed all standards and its perfomance is completely optimal.
COMMISSIONING
Thoroughly verifying that the generator set, created according to our client’s requirements, is in perfect conditions before and after the definitive delivery is vital. This examination is indispensable in order to ensure that there are no subsequent issues with your generator set, as well as to minimize and eliminate all risks. At Genesal Energy we can always offer you commissioning, we don’t want anything to fail.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
Our Technical Support Service team is in charge of the maintenance, installation and repair of generator sets and offers customized client service. It’s a reference in predictive maintenance (remote management and supervision), cutting down repair time considerably in the event of breakdowns, as well as in multi-brand servicing.
