Installation of generating set for hydroelectric plant

Once the project is completed, the plant will increase its capacity from 125 MW to 175 MW to face the expected impact on its hydrological systems due to climate change.

Located in Central Asia, Tajikistan, with a population of 9 million, is the 148th economy by volume of GDP and one of the most vulnerable countries in the area, not only from a socio-economic point of view. Due to its glacial hydrology, it is also very sensitive to the effects of climate change.

Tajikistan, with no access to the sea and a 90% of mountainous terrain, is classified as the most vulnerable country to climate change in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. The frequency of droughts, floods and landslides have increased in recent years and the country urgently needs to reinforce its electricity supply facilities because network improvements are vital to provide the population with a service as basic as energy. The rehabilitation and modernization of one of its hydroelectric plants, which provides electricity to more than 500,000 people, is one of these projects.

Designed to withstand cold and humidity

We have participated in the rehabilitation works through the design, manufacture and supply of an emergency generator set. The generator’s mission consists of providing emergency power to the installation in the event of a drop in the electricity supply, guaranteeing in that way the correct operation of the plant, thanks to its start-up in record time.

In the case of the hydroelectric plant, a generator set with very good weather resistance was needed to withstand the cold and humidity in the winter months.

The generator set designed by our team of engineers has all the necessary protections: special paint treatment against rust, IP54 protection degree of the canopy, and monitored grilles that completely isolate the generator from inclement weather when it is not running and reduce the risk of water ingress if it is in operation. It was equipped with a heating system inside the canopy in such a way that a correct temperature is guaranteed at all times, and also allows the elimination of the damaging moisture (especially for the alternator).

Special packing

The generator supplied to the client belongs to the so-called special or bespoke generators as it is made to measure, meeting the specific requirements of the client throughout the whole process, from the beginning of the discussions to find out what product they required to the work of moving and installing the equipment in its final location.

In this case, in addition to the particular characteristics of the generator set, a special large packaging was required to shield the equipment during sea and land transport since the destination, a very remote area of Central Asia, required a long journey with several transfers.
