Uninterrupted power for the healthcare sector with two emergency generator sets installed in a UK hospital

In a hospital every second counts when it comes to keeping operating rooms, intensive care units and life-support equipment running.

Installing reliable backup power systems is essential to guarantee the continuity of services and protect patients’ lives in the event of any interruption to the electrical supply.

Genesal designed and supplied two open generator sets which purpose is to ensure uninterrupted operation in the hospital’s critical areas, using equipment properly sized and adapted to the demands of the premises.

Reliability and redundancy for critical installations

The client required a backup system with maximum reliability and continuity, capable of responding to any incident affecting the main grid. Our Engineers designed two generator sets rated 1,860 kVA PRP each, equipped with redundant batteries, starting and charging systems, all managed automatically to ensure intelligent, self-governing operation.

Due to the high number of incoming power cables and the structural constraints of the installation site, our team developed a custom-made power cabinet integrated into the generator’s base frame. This design allows overhead cable entry, improving space efficiency and accessibility. It also provides both front and top access, significantly facilitating connection, maintenance and system verification tasks.

Engineering applied to healthcare

This project posed a technical challenge due to the stringent safety and reliability requirements of the hospital environment, where the margin for error is non-existent guaranteeing supply to intensive care units, operating theatres and diagnostic systems.

Our Engineers designed two generator sets rated 1,860 kVA PRP each, equipped with redundant batteries, starting and charging systems

Such installations demand precise coordination between design, manufacturing and commissioning. Our extensive experience in developing tailored solutions for the healthcare sector enables us to provide systems that combine mechanical robustness, energy efficiency and ease of maintenance, always adapted to the specific needs of each facility.

Technical design adapted to the hospital environment

Each generator set is equipped with 3,000 A withdrawable circuit breakers, two 2,500 W heaters with recirculation pump, and a fully self-managed redundant battery system using Victron modules, guaranteeing an immediate response to any eventuality.

The result is a robust and efficient system, designed to deliver safe and continuous power in an environment where reliability is synonymous with life.

Key Features

  • Power and configuration: two open generator sets, each rated 1,860 kVA PRP, designed to operate in parallel and ensure continuous supply in the event of a grid failure.
  • Full redundancy: duplicated battery, charger and starting systems, automatically managed to maximise operational reliability.
  • Tailor-made design: power cabinet integrated into the baseframe, engineered to optimise space and allow overhead cable entry.
  • Accessibility and maintenance: front and top access for easier connection, inspection and servicing.
  • High-spec components: 3,000 A breakers, 2,500 W heaters with recirculation pump and redundant battery system with Victron modules.
  • Critical application: secure and continuous power supply for essential hospital areas such as operating theatres, ICUs and diagnostic equipment.
