Genesal power in the biomass plant in Palencia

Biomass is the energy source of the thermal generation plant being built in Palencia, which is also the raw material used in an innovative heating network capable of generating hot water and providing heating for 10,000 homes. The project, revolutionary in the region, is possible thanks to an investment of 25 million euros and Genesal Energy participates by reinforcing the security of its facilities with a bespoke emergency generator set.

We designed and manufactured the generator set that the client needed at our headquarters with a fundamental objective: to guarantee the normal use of the facilities in case of any unforeseen event or failure in the power supply.

The process began after a detailed study of the characteristics of the thermal cogeneration plant, which works with biomass generated from wood chips and which has additional natural gas boilers that contribute to reinforcing safety in emergency situations.

The project will save 26,275t of CO2 per year, a 93% reduction compared to a conventional fossil fuel solution. The facilities will be fully operational by next winter and, if everything is as planned, will have a 22-kilometre network by 2024.

A step towards decarbonisation

The Palencia bioenergy plant is an example of optimisation and use of renewable energy, a challenge of decarbonisation to reduce the environmental footprint and a step towards an increasingly greener future, a philosophy that we at Genesal Energy share and implement not only by participating in projects that respect the planet but also with our commitments to the 2030 Agenda, the Chair of Energy Transition and the SDGs.

WHAT DID THE PLANT NEED?

To provide emergency power on a continuous basis in the event of a failure or unforeseen situation in the facility which consists of: two Biomass boilers of 5MW and 2MW each, and a natural gas boiler of 6MW, to meet the heating and domestic hot water needs in a initial phase.

WHAT WAS THE GENESAL SOLUTION?

A soundproof 1,000 kVA generator set, capable of providing 910 kVA prime power and 1,000 kVA standby. The unit is equipped with an 1,000-litre base frame integrated fuel tank.
The unit was assembled in the new, versatile 5000M modular canopy with an upper air outlet module added to it, leaving the final dimension at 6550 mm long. Sound pressure measurements were carried out in open field, giving the following results:

  • 78.4 dB average sound pressure at one metre distance
  • 72 dB average sound pressure at seven metre distance
  • These noise levels are well below those offered by the market.
